ENTRANCES AND ALLEYWAYS: AN ITALIAN PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY
Italy captured me from the moment I set foot on the land. I experienced a lightening of heart, a connection to earth. My first interactions with strangers involved singing and dancing, drinking espresso on a street corner, sharing a family song, that my father-in-law would sing at dinner, joined by a 92 year old winemaker--no longer a stranger. Many times, I found myself walking down alleyways, wondering what was behind the ancient wood doors or around the corner or down the stairs. Or I found myself looking out from ancient overlooks imagining history. The photographs below reflect the experience, wonder and transformation I felt.
WALKING ANCIENT PATHS
  OLD WOODEN DOORS
                       DEEP IN MEDIEVAL ALLEYWAYS
STONES WORN
BY FEET AND HOOVES,
LONG GONE
LIGHT AND SHADOWS
           HOLDING MYSTERIES
STONES
    UNDER FOOT
TAKE YOU BACK
                            CENTURIES
LEAD YOU TO WELL WORN PLACES
LISTEN!
THE SHADOWS CALL YOU
             FOLLOWING, SEARCHING
ALLEYWAYS
AS DOORS OPEN
      SUN
LIKE A SWOOSHING WIND
             SWEEPS IN
WARM TUSCAN BREEZES
               SICILIAN SKIES
LIKE WET SILK ON YOUR SKIN
WALLS LIKE BAKED BREAD
COOL STONE UNDERFOOT
SLOWS YOU DOWN,
          SECURES YOU TO THE SOIL
BELOW
TASTE OF WINE ON YOUR LIPS
PECCORINO ON YOUR TONGUE
COLORS OF EARTH AND SUN
                DRAW YOU IN
CAPTURE YOU
AS IF DREAMING
LISTENING TO THE STREAM
                 GUIDING YOU
CALLING TO YOU
FROM AN OLD WORLD
WHISPERING TO YOU
WHERE WILL EACH STONE,
               EACH ALLEY, LEAD
OVER EACH HILL
THROUGH EACH VINEYARD
IT GATHERS YOU UP
MAKES YOU SING
IN DEEP TENOR NOTES
MAKES YOU DANCE
FALL IN LOVE
WONDER
WAITING ON THE EDGE
AT HOME
YET READY
TO LEAP OFF
DOWN THE NEXT ALLEYWAY
